Building an Age-Friendly Neighbourhood in West Winds

LGNI were delighted to receive a small grant from NIHE’s Community Safety Fund to pilot a project in West Winds estate in Newtownards. We worked with local community partners, including the West Winds Development Association and Supporting Communities NI to build an age-friendly neighbourhood by developing a range of projects that connect generations in the estate. Whilst the estate already enjoys close community connections, there are always opportunities to build on this and in particular, develop trust and positive perceptions between generations.

There were three project developed in the estate: The ‘West Winds Wailers’ is an all-age singing group which meets in Cuan Court (Trust –run supported accommodation for older people living with dementia). Secondly, Primary 6 from West Winds Primary School visited residents in Blair House Care Home. The pupils took part in in Dementia friend training delivered by The Alzheimers’ Society before their first visit. Thirdly, we worked with North Down Training to explore the potential for a small intergenerational mentoring project, which we hope might develop further in the future
