Connect IT

Using digital tech to bring generations together and boost digital skills

Following on from the I Tea Time project (2016) working with schools, older people’s partnerships and Barclays Bank Digital Eagles LGNI have accessed funding through the Department of Finance NI’s GoON NI programme to run the ConnectIT project. Over 3 months the project involved partnering with Belfast City Council, local schools and Barclays Bank to deliver intergenerational Digital Inclusion projects in four Belfast Community Centres, equipping them as ‘super-connected’ hubs (North, East, South and West).

The idea has been to utilise the resource of the Digital Age Project toolkit and the community centres (which are now superconnected hubs) to provide learning to older people. Pupils from Little Flower School, Ashfield Boy’s, De La Salle College and Victoria College have taken part. The school pupils took on the role of IT tutors with additional support from Barclays Digital Eagles with the aim being to get older people online and use their local community centre to access IT equipment and Wi-Fi. The project has run from January to March and a celebration event took place in Belfast City Hall in April 2017.
